People who know me best know that I love design books. This Christmas was no different, but I was especially captivated by this particular book, Lars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design.

Gustavian colors and embellishments fill some pages, stark modern design fills the others. This book has something for everyone.

It is a lot more than just another pretty picture book. It is a tutorial on how to get the Scandinavian style combined with a history lesson. In Bolander’s own words, the book “shows a more functional way of living, which is what is needed now.”

Some of the painted pieces are amazing, such as this striking sideboard in Bollander’s own home. While most sideboards are purely functional, this one, with its flared top, has a very unique shape.

Below is another striking black and gold table had me at first glance. All I could say was “wow,” then followed by, ” Hum, I could try that on …. just add a little trim down the legs, paint dark black and gild.” Right?

Other pages show off modern Scandi design at its best. Like this modern extension on an antique farm house.

I read it cover to cover in one sitting.  What better way to spend a winter evening in Maine than cuddled up with some design eye candy and a cup of cocoa.

Enjoy!
