Architectural Detail – Inspiring

Architectural detail has always been an inspiration for us.We find for decorating everything from houses to lamps comes from so many old world carvers and artist.

This wall just grabbed our attention. The different textures and patinas makes for a compelling display. You can use Efex moldings to create similar pieces of small architectural art for your own home. Just grab your favorite pieces and a canvas, viola! Instant art!

Efex As Art

While this facade is a little large to duplicate inside a normal home, the idea of mixing gothic and romantic is wonderful eye candy.

The same is true of this embellishment on an entryway door. However, if you just used a simple design like the bottom panel, it would become instantly a country style. We just love how these styles can work in so many settings.

This elegant door handle in a smaller form could be a marvelous escutcheon on a large bureau or sideboard. The curves are just wonderful.

Finally, the doors behind this bed suggest a fun panel that could easily be imitated on a pair of doors positioned behind any bed. It is such a great idea for a headboard.

What do you think? Should we make some of these designs as Efex?

Elegant French Linen Trumeau…featuring M

Elegant French Linen Trumeau…featuring M

When our friend Stacey of Faux Studio Designs and I finally discovered the Paris flea markets the day of shopping became a recipe for fun and mischief.

One of the markets was full of Trumeau mirrors in every shape and size. It was love at first sight but, the size was more than our carry-on luggage could handle.

Stacey is also one of our Efex stockists and loves antique embellishments just like us! We were thrilled when we found M, our newest Efex moulding and since the Trumeau stall was right next door the perfect project came to mind pretty quickly.

When it comes to Trumeau mirrors the bigger the better. My husband made the first one for a project in Rhode Island last summer. This fall we finally made a trumeau for our home in Maine. You can make one in any shape or size to fit your home using this DIY tutorial as a guide.

The top of the mirror is trimmed in Efex trim T10, with simple T9s along all four sides.

For painting enter French Linen a favorite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® color.  I love this color, a warm, taupey-grey that fits in perfectly with our French-nautical style.

And there she is, M1 the jewel that started this whole project, where she was always meant to be.

This makeover certainly adds a bit of Parisian glamor to the Maine County Home.

For those details on how we made the mirror see our DIY post. For other great trumeau post see Virginia and Stacey and their take on a trumeau.

The Four Hour IKEA Hack…

Don’t you just love this IKEA hack.

Swedish modern to stone washed denim in just 4 hours!

Our stockist and friend Janet Metzger from the Empty Nest in Warrenton, Virgina just rocked this Ikea hack.

She started with a free cabinet that found on the curb, It was a huge IKEA wardrobe and was so Scandinavian modern it is hard to imagine it being anything else.

Layering shades of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in three shades of blue it was finished in 4 hours.  She took a can of paint 2 knobs and 2 small Efex escutcheons and turned it into a rustic work of art.

The perfect layers of paint shaded and dry brushed with just the right amount of distressing really set this apart from all the other hacks. The surface is finished in clear wax.

Janet and Tina created a perfect lovely stone washed denim look that is so “trending” right now. “It was so easy,” said Janet, “You could all do it over a weekend!”

Adding  new distressed knobs through the Efex escutcheons is such a simple yet effective way to add some style without going over the top. The added bonus was it covered the old knob holes and flaws.

Everyone, please give a big bravo Janet by checking out her facebook page for more great ideas. Don’t you think this piece just rocks!

Introducing M…

Introducing M…

Elegant New Molding from Efex

She’s sexy, bold, and very French. She’s our newest Efex bendable moulding, and she has a past. A lady with history!

IMG_3671

M is an original bronze with a sophisticated look about her. Like every lady of a certain age with a little buffing she shines.

We first met M on a laughable day of shopping at the St. Ouen flea markets in Paris. Stacey from Faux Studio Designs and I had driven from Normandy to Paris to see the sights and visit the fleas.

Note – they have a great rail system in France but we had rented a car to tour the country so why not drive to Paris? My children and husband were in the USA so there was no one around to tell Stacey why I should NEVER be allowed to rent a car and drive around in Europe.

We found Paris in the dark with the help of our iPhones – mon dieu. The phone died two blocks from our hotel so we were sans map. 3 hours and 5 laps around the Arc de Triomphe (I kept getting stuck in the inside track) and the Effiel Tower we found the hotel. Phew…time for wine.

Phew…time for wine.

The next morning it’s pouring buckets of rain, but we’re Americans in Paris who love antiques, so we’re off to the fleas anyway! And yes, I drove. After a few more laps around the Arc de Triumph (nowhere near the fleas) we found the markets – kind of. We ended up parking two arrondissements away and walking. Ouch.. several hours and shopping has not yet begun.

It didn’t take us long to find the mother load. Sitting in a tiny stall right next to 2 dozen of the greatest trumeau mirrors we have ever seen was a man selling old bronze and ormolu embellishments. I think our hearts skipped a few beats before we went crazy.

But at this point we’re almost out of cash. I sprint down the street in the rain for the ATM, did I mention it was almost closing time? I took out max cash and sprint back.

When I arrived Stacey was proudly holding M. She had been dug out of the bottom of a crate, but still had all of her chic Parisian style. We finished the day with a lot of bronze, many of which are soon to be Efex, But M was the star of the day.

A large wreath with two crossed federal flames and a small bow – she measures 10″ x 10″ and is totally French. The retail price is $39.00. Now M1 is a bendable version available for you to get the perfect French look.

fit=350-12

Like all of our 160+ designs she’s bendable and ready to decorate anything you can think of. It is easy to gild with gilding wax, metallic paint, or foils. We layered different colors of gilding wax to achieve the great patina above.

Soon, we will show you how we finished the trumeau mirror below.
